What are the best options for bridal hair accessories?

Congratulations - you've found the one (the dress that is)! Now all that's left to do is pick your hair accessories to complement it. There's an exciting range to choose from, whether you're looking for something understated or really "out there". In this blog, we look at what's available and share our tips on how to choose the perfect hair piece.

How to pick wedding hair accessories

Just like your dress, the perfect hair accessories are out there waiting to be found. To help you narrow down your search, we have these tips for you.

Your bridal hairstyle

Before you can think about hair accessories, consider how you'll be wearing your hair on the big day - will it be a romantic, tousled up-do or a classic half-up, half-down? This will make the difference between what's workable and what's not! Hair pins, for example, aren't the ideal choice if you want to wear your hair down, but look elegant in an up-do.

If your hair is quite fine, then try to avoid bulky or weighty hair accessories, that will shift around during the day. If it doesn't feel secure, it could end up being a distraction.

Your theme/ style

The theme of your wedding day and your own personal style should also influence the type of bridal hair accessories you choose. If yours is a destination or a garden wedding, then a floral hair arrangement would suit the romantic, laid-back feel of the day. But if art deco is more your thing, a 1920s inspired tiara would fit perfectly.

Your wedding day should reflect your personality, so stick to what you feel comfortable with, whether that's something understated, bohemian, or extravagant.

Your wedding dress

When choosing your hair accessories, think about the design of your wedding dress - the right piece can pull your whole look together. We recommend picking out the details of your dress in your hair accessories. If your dress has pearl embellishments, for example, then a faux pearl headband or hair pin would make an elegant addition.

There are some rules of thumb when it comes to matching the colour of your hair accessories and your wedding dress. As a very rough guide:

  • Ivory and champagne-coloured dresses look best with gold
  • Pure white dresses work well with silver, platinum, and pearl
  • Diamond white suits yellow gold, rose gold, silver, and pearls

Keep in mind that this is only a guideline, so if your dress is ivory but you've got your heart set on a platinum hair slide, don't let it stop you.

Bridal hair accessories - the options

Now you know what to look for, what are your options? We've put together the key trends in 2021/22 bridal hair accessories.

Hair vines

The bridal hair vine is trending this season and is perfect for a variety of hairstyles. It can be bent into different shapes and worn like a headband, twisted around a bun, or tucked into an up-do for the ultimate chic look.

Tiaras

Tiaras, headbands, and flower crowns are still popular, and they are great for wearing with hair up or down, and the classic half-up/half-down. Play it safe with something understated or make a statement with a dramatic headpiece.

Hair comb/clip

Bridal hair combs and clips work best in an up-do, but look just as good in a half-up/half-down style. If you'd prefer to leave your hair down, you could sweep it to the side and use a comb or clip to secure it in place.

Hair pins

Scattered across an up-do, the humble hair pin can add an understated sparkle to your hair arrangement. Choose from faux pearls or crystals to pick out the details in your dress and tie the whole look together.

If you're spoilt for choice, then why not switch your hair accessories between the ceremony and the evening reception. American actress and producer, Lena Dunham, changed her headpiece three times during her London wedding in September 2021. She started the day with a veil before switching to a crown and finishing with a headband.

Three of the top accessory designers

For on-trend, beautiful bridal hair, these designers are among the best in the industry.

Jennifer Behr

We love the Denari Bobby Pin Set from Jennifer Behr in New York City. These metal cameos will add a vintage feel to your day at $168 for a set of three. Jennifer's designs have been worn by celebs like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Brie Larson on the red carpet.

Lelet NY

Our favourite headband comes from New York designer, Lelet NY. The Sofia gold-tone headband with Swarovski crystals is one to splash out on at £355. Add a bit of glamour to your day and follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Garner and Cara Delevingne.

Eden b. Studio

London-based, Eden b. Studio has an enviable range of elegant hair accessories and even takes bespoke orders for brides who want a creation of their own.

The best bridal hair accessories

Like everything else, your hair accessories should represent your style. Your wedding day isn't the time to try something outlandish that you might regret when you look back on the photos in years to come. Trends may come and go, but the memories of your wedding will last a lifetime, so pick something you feel confident wearing and own it!
